What is the difference between OFCu copper and ECu?
The difference stems from the method used to produce the individual wires that make up the conductor. OFCu (purity 99.95%) is defined as oxygen-free (non-deoxidised) copper, whilst ECu (purity 99.90%) is copper containing oxygen.
For individual wires with a diameter of between 0.07 and 0.15 mm, OFCu copper is used, whilst for those with a diameter of between 0.20 and 0.30 mm, ECu copper is used.
FLRY cables
FLRY cables are low-voltage cables designed for use in vehicles. They are manufactured with thin-walled PVC insulation. The thinner insulation means that the cables have a rated voltage of 60 V (by comparison, FLY cables have full PVC insulation and a rated voltage of 230 V), whilst their current-carrying capacity depends on the cable’s cross-sectional area.
Another feature is the wide operating temperature range. It ranges from -40°C to +105°C. This means that FLRY cables can also be used in the engine compartment to wire components located some distance from the engine block, as well as near its lower section.
Owing to their properties, these cables are often specified at the vehicle design stage for use in low-voltage electrical systems and are one of the main types of cable used in the automotive industry.
FLRY cables are manufactured in two versions, which differ in terms of conductor design:
- FLRY-A – with the wires twisted at regular intervals. This design makes the cable stiffer.
- FLRY-B – with irregularly twisted strands, made from a greater number of thinner wires. This ensures a smaller minimum bend radius and greater flexibility of the cable.
